New Delhi: In a tragic turn of events, two members of the Indian Armed Forces lost their lives, including an Indian Air Force officer and a BSF Sub-Inspector, while seven others sustained injuries due to intensified shelling and drone assaults from Pakistani forces in the Jammu region over the last 24 hours.
Sergeant Surendra Kumar Moga, a 36-year-old medical assistant with the IAF's 36 Wing, was fatally struck during a Pakistani attack while stationed in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir.
Having been redeployed from Bengaluru just four days prior due to rising tensions, Moga's family in Mehradasi village, located in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, received the heartbreaking news on Saturday.
He leaves behind his 65-year-old mother, Nanu Devi, his wife Seema, and two children.
The local community gathered to pay their respects as arrangements for a state funeral commenced.
Moga hailed from Mandawa in Jhunjhunu, and District Collector Ramavatar Meena confirmed that he was stationed at the 39th wing of the IAF at the Udhampur airbase when he was killed in the early hours of Saturday.
Upon learning of the incident, Meena and the district police superintendent, Sharad Chaudhary, visited Moga's family to convey their condolences.
The Collector stated that Moga's remains would be transported back to Jhunjhunu by Sunday evening.
He assured the family of necessary assistance and financial support during this difficult time.
In a separate incident, Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imtiaz was killed when his BSF unit, positioned along the International Border in the RS Pura sector, came under heavy fire from Pakistan.
While Imtiaz succumbed to his injuries, seven others from his unit were reported stable and receiving treatment.
Additionally, Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, a JCO from Himachal Pradesh, lost his life due to an artillery shell explosion near his post in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch.
Rifleman Sunil Kumar, aged 25, from the J&K Light Infantry, also died from injuries sustained during overnight gunfire and shelling in the RS Pura sector.
Despite a ceasefire agreement announced by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, which was to take effect from 5 PM Saturday, India reported that Pakistan violated this understanding shortly thereafter.
In response, the Indian Army has initiated retaliatory measures against border intrusions.
During a special briefing, Foreign Secretary Misri emphasized that India takes these violations seriously and has instructed its Armed Forces to respond decisively to any further breaches along the International Border and the Line of Control.
He condemned the aggression and called on Pakistan to recognize the severity of the situation and take immediate action to halt such hostilities.
